What is the Dallas Judging Center Online Slide Catalog?

The Dallas Judging Center Slide Catalog is a database that indexes and lists ALL  the slide collection for all the AOS awards that the Dallas Judging Center has available for the center's personnel and affiliated judging centers. It is under final verification, so not all the slides are available yet.

Why go to an online catalog?

For the first time, the Dallas Judging Center personnel and affiliated judging will have the ability to search and request slides via the Internet. This gives the user a great advantage because you can consult what slides are available in the Dallas Judging Center before putting your program together. This will also allow to maintain the slides received from AOS up to date , indexed and available, as soon as they are received into the Judging Center.

How do I  search for a slide in the slide collection?

When you use the online catalog, think as if you were using the Bishop Book. There are three criterias: Genus, Cross and Cultivar.

You can search by strings in the SLIDE CATALOG  or you can search by clicking on any genus with the SLIDES AVAILABLE BY GENERA

Searching By Strings (in the SLIDE CATALOG)

In order to search by string, you need to select the SLIDE CATALOG link from the left pane of the web page. You will be presented with a screen that allows you to key in strings for the genus, cross, and cultivar.

To look for a slide, simply type the string to search in the boxes. You can use one or multiple criteria depending on how you would like to filter your results (See Examples below). No need to type * or any other wildcard. As easy as that!

For Genus, you can choose "Contains", "Begin With", "End with", "Exact".

NOTE: You don't need to type the full genera name, but you need at least 4-5 characters for the search to be meaningful and faster.

For Cross and Cultivar, you can type any string,

NOTE: You don't need to type the full cross/cultivar name, but you need at least 4-5 characters for the search to be meaningful and faster.

The catalog is NOT case sensitive, so no worries if you use uppercase or lowercase.

Searching by "Slides Available by Genera"

Searching by the different genera is very easy. Care must be exercised for genera with large number of slides (i.e. Phalaenopsis, etc)

In order to search by slide Genera, click on the link SLIDES AVAILABLE BY GENERA  located on the left pane. You will be presented with a list of genera for which we have slides available. Then just click on the desired genera. Please note that the slide count is listed. For smaller groups, this is ok, but for big amount of slides (like phalaenopsis) the whole list of slides will be displayed and might crash your computer. In that case, a string search is better.

How would the result of my search look like?

The results of your search will appear sorted by Genera, then by Cross name, then by Cultivar name. You will also get the Award, the Score, and a "Catalog ID".

You will also get information if the slide is available or checked out. At the end of each slide listing, you will see a "request link"

How do I request a slide from the Online Slide Catalog?

For slide requests, you first need to research the catalog per the search methods explained in this tutorial.

When you find the slide you would like (displayed in the table results), you can simply click on the "request" link at the end  the line in the results table. YOU MUST BE LOGGED IN TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS.

This will change the "Request" link to "Requested". That means that the slide has been reserved for you. (See below)

When you have selected all the slides an are ready to send your request list, click on the left pane SUBMIT REQUEST link. You will see a list of slides and you can "unrequest" slides if you need to do so (by clicking "delete" next to the slide).

When you verify the list and are happy with it, hit the "Send Email Request" Button. This will send the request to the Slide Librarian. You will be contacted as soon as possible to arrange pick up date /  time or delivery method.

PLEASE ALLOW AT LEAST 2 WEEKS BEFORE YOU NEED THE SLIDES. SLIDE REQUESTS MADE WITH LESS THAN TWO WEEKS NOTICE WILL NOT BE HONORED.

I sent my request, how do I check the status of my request?

After you submit your request, you will receive an email confirming that the request has been sent and you will be contacted by the SLIDE LIBRARIAN as soon as the slides have been pulled out of the library and are ready to be picked up/sent.

You can check the status of your previous requests by clicking on the left pane link "REQUEST STATUS / HISTORY". You will see a list of all the slides that have been sent for request by dates. Also, there is a column that shows "Request send" next to each slide or when the slides are ready and pulled you will see the status changed to "Request fulfilled".

Slide history / Re-questing previously requested slides.

The slide catalog keeps a history of the slides you have requested in the past. If you would like to request the same slides again, you can visit "REQUEST STATUS / HISTORY". If you have returned the slides that you have previously requested, a link that says "request again" will show up next to the slide history. Click on that link and then go to to
