Dendrobium johannis Rchb.f. Synonyms: Den. undulatum var. johannis
(Rchb.f.) F. M. Bailey, This month we take a close look at a lesser known member of the Spatulata Section, Den. johannis, named in honor of John Gould Veitch, a nurseryman and orchidist in 19th century England. This is a neat, small plant with medium brown pseudobulbs up to 20 cm long ( A. Millar) or up to 30 cm long x 1 cm wide (Lavarack, Harris and Stocker). The pseudobulbs often appear as yellow with purple striations. There can be up to eight leaves, medium green, arranged in two ranks in the upper third of the pseudobulb. The lanceolate leaves can grow as long as 15 cm. The 20 cm long inflorescence issues from an upper node with from 2-20 flowers measuring up to 5 cm across. The sepals and petals are arranged evenly around the flower, sometimes twice twisted, cinnamon brown fading to gray as the flower ages. Lip is white to yellow with purple veins on the side lobes. The flowers appears in Autumn and last for three weeks. Clone ‘Black Magic Woman’ received a CHM of 80 points in December 1991. The description follows: “Thirty-two flowers of superb color and four buds on three erect inflorescences borne on a small plant; sepals and petals mahogany; lip clear yellow; compact growth habit and flower undulation are passed to progeny, desirable in today’s horticulture; form is of variety nigrescens. Nat. spr. 3.8 cm, e.6 cm vert; ds 0.4 cm w, 2.0 cm l; pet 0.4 cm w, 2.1 cm l; ls 0.3 cm w, 1.8 cm l; lip 0.7 cm w, 1.0 cm l.” Den. johannis is native to Australia, the islands of the Torres Strait and Papua New Guinea. |
