INSTRUCTIONS FOR OUTSTANDING
CATTLEYA PARENTS FOR RESEARCH IN 2005
The outstanding Cattleya Parents homework for 2005 is a
continuation of our Cattleya studies from last year. We covered a
lot of ground last year, but we did not spend enough time studying
breeding traits. The attached list represents the finest parents
that have shaped the superior Cattleya hybrids available to us.
As we work up the illustrated family trees, it should
help us to recognize breeding traits. This is where you really
need the file I have been telling you to build of illustrated catalogs
and duplicate copies of orchid publications. Eventually you will
need a large file cabinet with may folders, some rather thin, but many
bulging at the seams (i.e. Cattleya breeding(.
The old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words
is right, but do not overlook the articles from the orchid publications.
They are pure gold. Many knowledgeable authors have been willing
to share what they have learned. These articles contain the
information on breeding traits that you need to know. You
have heard Tom and I say many times that if you only use the text book
and Wildcatt, that you have not done any research. Consult these
excellent articles on breeding in your ODCs, old AOS Bulletins, and
Orchids magazines. Use this information in your reports.
You may find pictures of early hybrids difficult to
find. Sometimes early orchid books have woodcuts of famous
hybrids. Jones and Scully catalogs were full of pictures of
species and hybrids. Sometimes you can even find orchid books and
catalogs at Half Price Books.
-
Read the attached list; make a selection that
you want to research, and tell me today which one you have chosen.
-
Prepare an illustrated family tree of that
outstanding hybrid that you have chosen.
-
Then select 3 major hybrids sired by your selected
famous hybrid that started excellent breeding lines of their own.
Prepare an illustrated family tree on each of the selected hybrids.
-
You have all year to do this assignment. I
want you finished illustrated genealogies in October 2005.
-
If you have time and the desire, select another
outstanding hybrids from the list and begin again.
